Panama Butterflies

This was a butterflying trip organised by Naturetrek although it was run on the ground by a Panamanian company called Canopy Family Tours with a tour leader (Tino Sanchez & Gina, a bird guide who was learning butterflies) provided by them as well. It was mostly in rainforests so many forest butterflies were seen although in contrast to Ghana no baiting was used to lure canopy butterflies down to ground level.  It was a 2 base holiday between Canopy Tower & Canopy Lodge. The Tower is an old US radar station  & reached up into the canopy allowing some canopy species to be seen that would never be spotted otherwise (particularly small brightly coloured hairstreaks) The Lodge was a more modern layout well designed with gardens & woods that housed many varieties of butterflies from many families.  Trips out from the two bases were very local, often returning for lunch before visiting somewhere else. One day was spent using 4 wheel drives to head up to over 1000 metres to see some high altitude butterflies we hadn't encountered elsewhere.
